Salsa Night for MS: Dance and Help Raise Money for a Good Cause

Salsa Night for MS: Dance and Help Raise Money for a Good Cause
A good friend of mine, Christina Hake, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis over one year ago. For those of you who don’t know Christina, she is a great dancer and an excellent dance instructor. I often tell her that if I opened my own studio, I would hire her as an instructor in a second.
I met Christina about 7 years ago at Club Conga when she was only 19 and an instructor at Salazar’s. I quickly noticed that her energy and charisma make her a truly unique instructor and dancer.
About one year ago, I noticed a change in Christina. She seemed less energetic and didn’t come out dancing quite as often. I didn’t learn until a year later that she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
I was upset by the news, but with the help of Christina learned more about MS. I didn’t really feel the magnitude and the impact of this disease until someone I knew personally was affected. It is difficult to believe that anything could hold back someone with such boundless energy. And in true Christina style, she is hosting a fundraiser this Friday, August 15th at Sofia to raise money for MS research.
Christina and her team “SMyelin’ As we Ride” are joining more than a thousand cyclists for the Bike MS: Waves to Wine Ride. All funds received from this Salsa Night for Multiple Sclerosis will go towards the fundraising goal for the ride.
Whether you dance salsa or not, stop by and show your support for the cause. If you are interested in performing at this event, please send me an email. It will be a great time for a good cause. Hope to see you there.
Where: Sofia – 815 11th Street, Sacramento
When: Friday, August 15th
Time: Lesson @ 8:00 p.m.; Dancing from 9 p.m. – 2 a.m.
Cost: $5.00 at the door
Why: Hosted by Fahad and Christina Hake to raise money for MS research

FITO REINOSO Y SU RITMO Y ARMONÍA
For over a decade, Fito Reinoso has made the Bay Area his home and is the only Cuban born based sonero in the area performing a variety of styles, from the most recent urban Havana grooves to “timba” to the classic son and cha-cha-cha, all with a voice reminiscent of the late and beloved legendary Cuban singer, Beny Moré. His dynamic personality and showmanship has led him to collaborate with some of the top musicians who reside in Cuba and the United States. Most recently, he has been in the studio recording his third album, Communícacion, featuring veterans Sandy Pérez (former principal soloist of AfroCuba de Matanzas), Carlos Caro (formerly with Paulito F.G.) and Junior Terry (from the critically acclaimed Los Terry Family), as well as showcasing young Bay Area talent including Patricio Angulo (timbal), Erick Barbería (congas) Michael Lazarus (bass), and Jason Moen (piano).
As well as being a talented Cuban sonero, Felix "Fito” Reinoso is also an accomplished singer-songwriter. At a very young age, Fito began playing tres and bass in the streets of Candekaria, in the province of Pinar Del Rio. He joined Orquesta Gloria de Cuba at the age of 12. A proud Mariel, he arrived to the United States in 1980 and soon began impacting the thriving Bay Area Latin Music scene. Fito has played with Cuban legends such as Francisco Aguabella, Armando Peraza, Carlos "Patato" Valdez and Israel Lopez "Cachao", among many others. He has companied the greatest local musicians without ever loosing his strong ties with Cuba, which transpire in his vibrant and modern repertoire.
Fito’s band, Ritmo y Armonía plays primarily original music, composed by Fito and inspired by contemporary Cuban rhythms. The orchestra plays more traditional Cuban genres such as son-montuno, cha-cha-cha, and bolero but always with a sound that is authentic. Fito Reinoso y su Ritmo y Armonía has performed at a number of Bay Area renowned nightclubs and festivals such as Yoshi's, The San Francisco Jazz Festival, The San Jose Jazz Festival, and is weekly scheduled at all the hot salsa dancing spots such as The Ramp, Elbo Room, Cigar Bar and Jelly's.
If you are looking for the scorching rhythms of Cuban new-wave, Fito Reinoso y su Ritmo y Armonía is guaranteed to please.
REVIEWS
Since arriving in the San Francisco Bay Area, Felix “Fito” Reinoso has established himself as a sonero mayor with potent original songs sung in a raspy tenor voice seasoned by the years. On Ya Llegamos, his self-produced sophomore outing, the Havana-born singer, composer, bandleader explores a variety of themes . . . . . . The spirit of the music carries this album with horn hooks galore, cool coros, a driving rhythm section and a street litany of improvised verses whose wisdom creates community using salsa Cubana and timba as forums for raw callejero expression.
Jesse Varela - Latin Beat Magazine, Feb 2002
Fito Reinoso's Ritmo y Armonía has been evolving for more than a decade in San Francisco, with a constantly changing group of musicians. The Cuban band plays a funked out mixture of Cuban music. Influenced by all Cuban music, from the folkloric jibaro to mambo, son and rumba, the end result makes for spectacular dance music and one hell of a good party.

When Danilo was a child,
his grandfather took him to the rehearsals of his Big Band era jazz group. His grandfather, Francisco Perez, known in Nicaragua as Pancho Perez, was the director and saxophonist of both his own groups, "The Black Cats" and "La Centroamericana"("the Central American"). These bands played the music of Benny Goodman, Glen Miller, Perez Prado, Artie Shaw and other music of the '50s.
This early exposure to jazz gave Danilo a strong foundation for his composing skills. The jazz influence is evident in his unique and original vocal style.
In his extensive musical career, Danilo has played with extraordinary internationally known musicians such as Ray Baretto, Ruben Blades, Mary Wilson of the Supremes, Benny Velarde and his Super Combo, Andy Narell, Ray Obiedo, Dave Valentin, Dizzy Gillespie, and Cal Tjader. He demonstrates some of his best work on bongo and vocals on Ruben Blades' CD, "Ruben Blades and Son del Solar, Live!"
"I feel lucky knowing that I have such a strong foundation in jazz, Caribbean music, and at the same time was exposed to the great soneros such as Cheo Feliciano, Ruben Blades, Hector La Voe, and Rafael de Jesus. I have taken these roots and have developed my own style of singing, composing and producing my music. I am a person who believes in the future and in the latest innovations (technological and other), and believe that Salsa and Latin Jazz should continue evolving, but we should not forget our roots."

If You like "Ozomatli" you would love "UPGROUND"
Upground is the young vibrant East L.A. band that has developed a huge following throughout the Southwest in the four short years they have been performing live. Their music is an indefinable blend of Ska, reggae, rock, and CUMBIA! It is sung in Spanish AND English. Their amazing horn section has been widely praised by everyone from the L.A. Times to Tu Ciudad magazine.
They recently released their debut full length CD called “Feel the Vibe” which received widespread critical acclaim. An overwhelmingly positive L.A. Times performance review brought larger attention; the CD Release Party for “Feel the Vibe” sold out the famous Hollywood venue The Knitting Factory and nationwide cable network siTV decided to focus on them for their “Jammin” television reality show. In “Jammin”, Upground got to meet and perform with their East L.A. mentors, Los Lobos.
Upground went on to win the 2006 Sprint Battle of the Bands, received a publishing deal with prestigious PEERMUSIC and have had their music played on local radio including L.A.’s Indie 103.1 (a major FM radio station), and they were profiled in Tu Ciudad magazine as “the next big thing from East L.A.” The music video for “Oye Chica” landed airplay on LATV, Mun2, MTV3es and internationally on Ritmoson Latino.
There has been no stopping the pace. The spring of 2007 found Upground making their debut showcase at the world famous South by Southwest music conference in Austin, Texas. Leading up to the showcase, Upground played a capacity filled siTV sponsored mini-tour billed as “Upground’s ROAD TO SXSW”. Latino University Magazine named them “Best College Band to See” and they followed that up with another mini tour, this time to Colorado. They were invited to perform on the nationwide cable network mun2’s VIVO show, which features performances by worldwide entertainers such as Chayanne, Shakira, and Daddy Yankee. They also make their first ever trip to New York City to showcase at the respected Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC).
Upground has come a long way from the high school jazz band and orchestras the members started in. They have performed with or shared the same stage with artists from Ozomatli and Los Lobos to The Killers and played at universities throughout the West. They have transformed into one of the most sought after young bands in the competitive Los Angeles music scene. Where will they go next?

Franklin “Kilín” Fontán and Carlos “Pitín” Pérez were born and raised in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. Major record label promoters by day, professional entertainers by nighttime. Together, for the last 17 years they have performed for thousands of people in clubs, major venues, radio station music festivals, records stores, concerts, private parties, you name it they’ve done it. They are also the favorite DJs of the stars. When Jerry Rivera, Daddy Yankee, Wisin & Yandel to mention a few want to throw a party, they hire Kilín & Pitín.
While working for the record labels they have promoted and personally worked with major Salsa and Merengue artists like; Tito Nieves, Olga Tañon, Toño Rosario, Frankie Negrón, Richie Ray & Bobby Cruz, Luis Enrique, Charlie Cruz, Rey Ruíz, Jerry Rivera, as well as many other major artists representing the Latin Pop, Rock en Espanol and Reggaeton genres.

Using the latest DJ equipment and technology they begin the night with your favorite Salsa, Merengue or Bachata tunes in Karaoke. If there is no singing volunteers available, no problem! Pitín, with a voice like Marc Anthony’s, will sing his heart out. After the Karaoke, the party begins with the latest brand new as well as classic Salsa, Merengue and Bachata videos played on a giant screen. Live band: La familia Son @ Sky Bar on Saturday November 4, 2006
Band Info
“La Clave de Mi Corazón” features La Familia Son’s repertoire of traditional son and old-school salsa, with an inflection of East Bay funk and Cuban timba. Afro-Caribbean folkloric music: rumba, bomba, and son form a central role in the group’s compositions and arrangements. La Familia’s original music also reflects thoughts about the world around us: the importance of music, community, and family mixed with a sharp look at the need for peace and justice. Of course all of the music is great for dancing! Please see the list of songs below to get a further idea of La Familia’s repertoire.

Vission Latina CD Release Party @ the Blue Water Friday April 15th 2005
Vission Latina:
After years of searching
for the right musicians to include in his own group, Carlos found them, one by
one, making music on his newly adopted home turf of Central California. Within
months of forming his group, Vission Latina, Caro began composing specifically
for the band. A good portion of 2003 was spent in the recording studio. Finally,
the band is putting the finishing touches on their debut cd.
Carlos
Caro
A native of Havana, Cuba, musically educated throughout his youth, and
well traveled as a professional performer, Caro appeared on the West Coast music
scene in 1996 to quickly become one of the most sought -after Latin
percussionist, simultaneously playing in the best Cuban, Salsa and Latin rock
bands throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. He has worked with Paulito FG,
Rebeca Mauleon, Omar Sosa,Eddie Palmieri,Armando Perazza,Malo,QBA, Avance,
Cubanacan, Candela,Ritmo y Armonia, and Dr. Loco's Rocking Jalapeño Band among
many others.
Carlos plays bongo and he was recently honored with the title of "Best bongo Timba Player of All Time" by the popular website www.timba.co. He also plays timbales, guiro, congas and hand percussion instruments. Kitikiba Pa Ti marks his first effort as a composer. Came to Bay Area 8 years ago
Pianist Marco A. Diaz was born in San Francisco where his musical
aptitude on trumpet and piano earned him scholarships and a degree in popular
music. Diaz has, in a very short time, become the most requested pianist by the
biggest names in the Bay Area Latin music scene, performing throughout the
country with Bobby Cespedes, John Santos, QBA, Candela, Tito Nieves, Eddie
Santiago and many more.
Bass player, Saul Sierra, of Mexico City, is also a graduate of the
Berklee College of Music where he received the "U.S. Scholarship Tour" award and
the "Outstanding Performer" award. A resident of the Bay Area since 1999, Sierra
has performed with John Santos, QBA, Orestes Villato, Mark Levine, Mike
Spiro,Snake Trio, and many other well respected musicians.
Eduardo Herrera
Lead
vocalist Eduardo Herrera was raised on a diet of Afro-Cuban and Afro-Venezuelan
music in Caracas, Venezuela. He sang music of camara/opera with The Venezuelan
Chamber choir before moving to the Bay Area in 1985 to work with several
ensembles including Charanson, QBA, La Moderna Tradicion, Benny Velarde's
Super Combo, and La Internacional de Tito Garcia among others. Eduardo has
also shared stages with Los Van Van, Larry Harlow, Fajardo, Yomo Toro, Afro
Cuban All Stars, Bamboleo and many others.
Julio Perez
Percussionist Julio Perez comes from Mayaguez, Puerto Rico,
where, having been born blind, he took on music as his vision. After a couple of
years of classical music training, Perez majored in performance studies at
Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mass., and recently joined the ranks of
California's rich treasure of fine performers. Aside from his entry into Vission
Latina, Perez performs regularly with the legendary Bob Moses and tours the U.S.
with groups, Bio Ritmo and Kilombomambo.
Kelly Ramires
Percussionist Kelly Ramirez graduated
from Stanford University with a Bachelor of Arts in music science and
technology. He's been writing, recording and performing ever since, residing in
the south of France and now in Modesto as one half of the popular local group
Johnny and Kelly. As one of Caro's most outstanding students, Ramirez brings a
dynamic spirit to Vission Latina.

worldwide performances in collaboration with world renowned and acclaimed
artists, are recognized for their contributions to the richness of an ever
expanding musical genre worldwide.
